Editware introduces new DPE-500 Series editor hardware and Super Edit NT software
GRASS VALLEY, CA - April 19, 1999 -- Editware introduces the new DPE-500 series editing system (Digital Production Editor) at NAB99 in Las Vegas, NV. The new Super Edit NT software was created specifically to run on a custom designed dual-processor platform running Windows NT. The DPE Series replaces the world famous VPE edit controllers that Editware has manufactured since spinning off from Grass Valley Products/Tektronix in 1996. Super Edit NT has all the previous Super Edit capabilities plus many new features such as increased performance, improved EDL handling/management, additional non-linear functionality, and much more.
Editware President Jay Coley explains, "Editware has taken the big step and has moved the Super Edit software to a robust and real-time capable Windows NT-based platform. We're very excited about this new family of editors and feel the future is very bright for hybrid editing systems like the new DPE series, particularly in light of HDTV proliferation and the continuing increase in the number of acquisition formats. The combination of linear and non-linear capabilities in controlling linear and random access devices, notably the Tektronix Profile Video File Server, allows editors and their edit suites to support linear and non-linear editing. We've optimized the system to take advantage of the best of both modes of operation."Chief Science Officer Steve Miller adds, "Many customers have continually expressed interest in having us update the hardware and we've now done that. The new DPE editing equipment is the first hardware product of Editware's own research and development. Super Edit NT continues our long history of upgrading the best editing software available, now in its eighth generation."
"We're showing this new and exciting DPE system in the main hall of the LVCC at booth #L20369" says Bob Lefcovich, VP Sales/Training. "We'll have three non-linear edit suites set up with the DPE-500; one as a "news" hybrid -sharing a Profile between two editors, one using motion-JPEG video, and the other using MPEG-2. You've just have to see how smoothly we can edit MPEG. We even jog it backwards! You owe it to yourself to give it a look."
Editware handles worldwide sales and distribution of the complete line of VPE / DPE editors, Super Edit and Super Edit NT software with dedicated 24 hour technical service and support. Visit the Editware web site at http://www.editware.com for more information.
Editware introduces new DPE-500 product line
GRASS VALLEY, CA - April 19, 1999 -- Editware, the Grass Valley edit controller manufacturer, is shipping a major new product, the DPE-500 hybrid edit controller. Editware, formed as a spin-off of the Grass Valley Group in early 1996, continues to sell and support the widely used VPE product family. The DPE product line enhances the capabilities of the industry standard Super Edit and adds non-linear speed and convenience with Super Edit NLE software (NLE). According to Bob Lefcovich, Editware's VP of Sales and Customer Support, "This is the first edit system to be built from the ground up as a hybrid editor with absolutely no compromise in linear, on-line capabilities."
The DPE is based on a custom, dual processor platform. One processor is dedicated to the user interface and database; the other is dedicated to real-time control functions, including machine control, synchronizing, and reading time code from all active controlled devices. Editware will continue adding features and capabilities to the DPE, in the tradition of Super Edit, now in it's 8th major release for the VPE family. Based on the WindowsNT® operating system, the DPE also supports numerous complementary applications.
Super Edit NLE software delivers a true hybrid system with precise control of all your linear devices (VTRs, DDRs, switchers, mixers, effects, etc) and non-linear speed. Using the Tektronix Profile video file server, Super Edit NLE can edit non-linearly in Motion-JPEG or MPEG-2 depending on the model of Profile. The non-linear, on-line aspects of the DPE-500 utilize the Tektronix Profile, either as a standalone video server or as part of a fibre channel network. NLE is very flexible: as many as four channels of Profile can be used at once, in addition to external VTRs and effects devices, enabling real-time transitions, effects, pre-read and simultaneous digitizing. For some applications, NLE may be used with a single Profile channel, allowing as many as four VPE or DPE Editors to be used with one Profile simultaneously, sharing the same Profile Clips and Directories. The key elements of the hybrid operating mode (NLE) are:
Logger Mode: The Super Edit Logger mode is used for batch digitizing (material can also be digitized as it is used during editing). As in creating a rough cut, tape material is viewed, selected and listed. Then, automatically, individual clips are created for each edit with specified head and tail material.
Modify Timeline: The virtual "R-VTR" is a Timeline and can be manipulated in a non-linear fashion. Edits can be inserted, moved, copied, lengthened, shortened, deleted, etc, by simply moving pointers on the Profile Timeline. Additional material can be inserted anywhere on the timeline regardless of original edit boundaries.
Edit to Timeline from external sources or effects: Original source material from VTRs, DDRs, switcher, mixer or other effects devices is recorded in real time and placed on the Timeline. The same commands are used to do a linear edit as are used to perform a non-linear edit.
Pre-Read Capability: With NLE, pre-read never actually "over-records" the original master. Pressing the UNDO key instantly reverts to the state of the Timeline before the pre-read. Another advantage is that the "R-VTR" can be played back at programmed motion speeds!
Swap: A single keystroke switches the R-VTR (Timeline) with a selected VTR source, making the edited Timeline immediately available to use as a source to the new tape R-VTR.
Editware NLE edits MPEG-2 with ease
GRASS VALLEY, CA - April 19, 1999 - Yes, you can edit MPEG-2. Regardless of GOP structure, you can electronically cut and splice on any frame you chose. Jog frame by frame both forwards and backwards, too! Editware announces MPEG-2 editing using Super Edit NLE non-linear software and the Tektronix Profile PDR300 and PRO Series video file servers. This capability is available for existing VPE editors as well as for Editware's new DPE-500 Series edit controllers.
Editware will be demonstrating the new DPE-500 Series edit systems and the Super Edit NLE software at NAB'99 in Las Vegas, April 19-22. MPEG-2 demonstrations with the DPE-500 and Super Edit NLE will be in both the Editware booth, at L20369 (S5), and the Tektronix Profile Partners Pavilion, at L22914 (S3).

EDLMAX powers Editware's new 409NT EDL Processing software
GRASS VALLEY, CA - April 19, 1999 -- Editware selected EDLMAX to develop the new 409NT Edit Decision List (EDL) Processing software as the successor to the award-winning VPE-based 409 EDL cleaning application. Running on Windows NT, 95, 98 and Macintosh, 409NT is now a complete EDL toolbox, providing online assembly optimizations with Pre-Read, Sorting, Grouping, Interleaving, EDL format conversions (CMX, GVG, Sony), advanced EDL manipulation, and, of course, EDL cleaning. For OMF and other specialized EDL support, there is now 409NT plus!.
Brooks Harris, creator of EDLMAX: "The source management issues involved in the development of the NLE processing have some similarities to OMF (Open Media Framework) and we were able to leverage that knowledge to accommodate Editware's requirements. I'm excited about the Editware products' role in integrating on-line editing into facility-wide content management."
Bob Lefcovich, Editware VP Sales and Customer Support, says "We think our new NLE applications are a breakthrough in online editing. 409NT's EDL processing extends the NLE capabilities. Harris' expertise helped us add valuable features to our systems and we look forward to continued development with him."
409NT runs as an integrated option within the DPE-500 Super Edit NT application or as a stand-alone application to support existing VPE Series systems. Special processing provides direct support to the Super Edit NLE editing application to facilitate auto-assembly. 409NT creates two specially processed EDLs: an NLE LOG EDL for batch digitizing source clips directly to the Profile, and an NLE PGM EDL which instantly conforms the digitized clips into the finished show.
